“On Monday, the teacher, Ms Jocelyn, asked Ozzie to tell everyone his news for news time. Ozzie was scared. What was Ms Jocelyn thinking? That he’d be crazy enough to get up in front of this strange mob and talk? And before it was even time for recess... Ozzie ran home.”⠀

There are so many things I love about this book. Most importantly it centres a family of colour, that is not a traditional ‘nuclear family’ in an everyday ‘non-issue’ based story. It also features a teacher of colour which makes my heart sing loudly! There are very few books, especially in Australia, that do this. Note: This book is written by a non-Indigenous teacher.

“What are you?” Some ask, very blunt and forthcoming. People don’t know how these questions might feel. So I take a deep breath before my repeal. My skin and my hair sometimes make me stand out. But the way that I look is not all I’m about. I’m sassy and smart with a kind giving heart. I’m courageous and brilliant and fierce and resilient. I am not a puzzle to figure out or a mysterious artefact to learn all about”⠀

This book is a celebration of self-love and acceptance for every little girl who has had to explain their looks or heritage. Children of colour constantly deal with these types of micro-aggressions that slowly chip away at their self esteem. Different is the new “normal” and it’s time that the world caught up. ⠀

“E is for Engineer. She builds new things and understands how different parts fit together.”

“J is for Judge. She makes decisions in court to promote justice and fairness for all.”⠀ ⠀

“U is for UN Ambassador. She promotes unity and friendship with leaders from around the world”⠀

This A-Z of careers focusses on girls and what they can be. It is a beautiful collection of diverse faces, bodies and job roles not always promoted as jobs that girls can do. The perfect addition to the bookshelf of parents who want their daughters to dream big and reject societal norms.⠀
